Both the bond and the certificate of insurance MUST have expiration dates on them. Also the contractor must have taken the Block & Associates Exam (Experior) or equivalent exam and submit a current letter from the jurisdiction where he took said exam. If he/she has not taken the Block or equivalent exam, he has to take our exam, and it’s given on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 a.m. It’s a 2 hour open-book exam and he can use his National Electric Code book. An 80% is required to pass our exam. ONLY ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS CAN PULL PERMITS.
Journeyman: In order to receive a journeyman license in the City of Shelbyville, he/she must hold a valid journeyman license somewhere else and submit a copy of said license with this completed application (

The journeyman exam also has an 80% passing score required. A journeyman can hold a license in his own name to preserve his active status, but he cannot engage in electrical work unless he’s doing it under the supervision of an active contractor and a permit has been issued for the work.
Apprentices: Anyone actively working under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor can obtain an apprentice license; there are no license requirements. He/she simply fills out the electrical license application (

If the applicant has an electrical contractor license from another jurisdiction, he/she can obtain a maintenance license here. If not, he has to take our exam which is given the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 a.m. here at City Hall. It is a 2 hour open-book exam and he can use the National Electric Code book.
