We are excited to announce that starting in mid-July the Shelbyville Street Department will begin a FREE, curbside recycling program for all residential homes in the City of Shelbyville! Pick up will be on residents’ regular trash day and will be a full recycling service (paper, plastic, glass, metal). During the months of May and June, we will be delivering a free recycling can to all homes in Shelbyville. If you are a Shelbyville resident and DO NOT WISH to participate in the program, please call our office or email us at and let us know so that we do not bring you a can.

We are very excited to offer this service to our residents. We feel it is our duty to start reducing the amount of waste our community is putting in the landfill and this is a great start. We hope you will help us with this goal.

Yard waste is now being collected by the yard waste truck for the season.  Please remember to put loose yard waste in paper sacks or containers MARKED yard waste with paint, sticker, etc.  We have yard waste stickers for purchase $2.00 each. Yard waste will be picked up on the same day as your trash.

** If you have done minor tree trimming, please contact the Street Department to get your address on the chipper list.  We run the chipper a few times a week, according to the addresses that have called in to be on our pick up list for larger tree limbs.

In February 2016, we started our first Pay to Pick Up event. To be clear- we are NOT charging for trash collection in Shelbyville or for our yearly Spring and Fall Clean Ups. These services will still be provided at no charge. The only fee will be to those who choose to use this particular program.

We will pick up larger items that we usually would not take outside of our regular clean ups for a fee. Residents who wish to use the program will need to visit our office to pay for a sticker or tag to put on the item that they wish to have collected. Items will not be collected without being tagged. Prices depend on the size of the item but vary from $10-$30. The item will be picked up on your next regular trash day, from the purchase date of your tag. Our first week to run the program will be February 1st-5th.

Although we are taking larger items for this program, we will not pick up anything that will require extra equipment. Items must be light enough for two people to pick up.

If you would like more information about the program, please call 392-5169.

Reminder:  All residents are required to place all trash into a trash bag and the bags must be in a trash can.  There cannot be loose trash in cans or bags placed on the ground. Cardboard can be dropped off at various recycle containers located around town or residents can call the Street Department to sign up for the paper recycling program.  Loose cardboard will not be collected with your weekly trash pick-up.

The Shelbyville Street Department is accepting electronic devices at our facility at 605 Hale Rd. which will be delivered to the Pollution Prevention Center at a later date to be recycled. Items may be dropped off just inside the gate of the facility where there is a bin labeled “Electronics”. Items that will be accepted are televisions, VCR/DVD players, computer monitors, hard drives, printers, keyboards, scanners, and copy machines. Items can be dropped off from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Drop off is for city residents only.
The Street Department will not be collecting these items at curbside; this is a drop off service only.
